In today’s stress-filled world, adrenal fatigue is becoming a common health issue. Educating yourself about what it is and how it can impact your health is more important than ever.

Let’s first understand the basic facts of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome then we’ll discover herbs used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat the condition effectively.

What is adrenal fatigue?

Adrenal fatigue happens when people get stressed out by problems and challenges encountered at home or in the workplace. The adrenal gland releases a large amount of cortisol when facing stress. This is a natural response to the fight-or-flight system that is in everyone’s body.

You might have also heard this health condition referred to as myalgic encephalomyelitis, chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS).

The excessive amount of cortisol released by the adrenal gland will now inhibit it from producing other helpful hormones needed by the body to function optimally.

Other diseases and disorders of the adrenal glands include ‎Cushing Syndrome, Addison’s Disease and ‎Pheochromocytoma. Interestingly, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome seems to more acutely affect women.

Signs and Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue and Excess Cortisol Levels

The signs and symptoms manifested when one has adrenal fatigue include lack of energy and general listlessness that usually occur in the morning. In the afternoons, people with adrenal fatigue have a compulsion to take power naps, yet still have insufficient energy to perform activities of daily living.

The mentioned symptoms also usually come along with cravings for caffeine, carbohydrate-rich foods and sugar. Another symptom would be the need to sleep all the time, which inexplicably affects more women than men. The fatigue could also be connected to hypothyroidism and fibromyalgia.

None of the symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are good. Who wants high blood pressure, depression, poor sleep patterns, wild mood swings and general irritability, headache, acute fatigue, etc?

Diet Modifications For Adrenal Fatigue

A change in diet can help reduce the symptoms of adrenal insufficiency. You can make some changes in your diet by starting to eat in portions and ensuring that you do so at the right time. Small frequent meals eaten throughout the day instead of three huge meals can help reduce adrenal fatigue. These meals should include healthy nutrients and botanicals.

It is also advisable to eat foods that help improve kidney functions such as black sesame seeds, asparagus, string beans, kidney beans, sweet potatoes, plums, walnuts, grapes and celery.

Foods high in sugar and salt as well as alcohol and smoking tobacco should be avoided especially during periods of adrenal fatigue.

Herbs for Adrenal Fatigue

Chinese medicine believes that it is the kidneys that are most affected when one has adrenal fatigue.

Treatment begins with herbs for adrenal fatigue which help the kidneys recover. This can last for a period of 60 to 120 days. Kidney tonics are prepared and one of these is Fenugreek, a seed that is aromatic and bitter and can be taken together with tea or milk as gruel.

Another good herbal remedy for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a bittersweet powder, Ashwaganda, which the sufferer should drink every day mixed with heated raw milk. This herb helps clear stress by improving sleep.

Damiana Leaf is an herb with spicy leaves should be mixed with cinnamon, lemon peel and dried ginger. Adrenal fatigue sufferers can eat this to reduce stress. These are only some of the herbs for adrenal fatigue used in Chinese traditional medicine.

Acupressure and Acupuncture For Adrenal Fatigue

Acupuncture is another holistic alternative health practice that may further provide relief for people afflicted by adrenal fatigue. This is done by stimulating key points connected to the kidneys. However, if the use of needles is not something that is comfortable for you, acupressure may help. This is possible by applying pressure between the Achilles tendon and medial malleolus, which is found in the ankle. A five-minute clockwise motion massage on each foot every day could bring positive results.

Whether it’s lifestyle changes, herbs for adrenal fatigue, or acupuncture/acupressure, there are many ways a person can find relief from this health condition before resorting to pharmaceutical means.

After all, the more natural the remedy, the better it is for the body.

  1. Speaking of hypothyroid, I have a friend who has taken medicine for several years and that does not work well for her. She is interested in replacing her 75 mcg Synthroid a
day with some thing else. I would like to know if there is any good herbal/mushroom remedies that this group can suggest.

Need to know if an alcohol extraction is best since that is my level of
expertise (hot water also). A source to purchase could also work if I cannot get the basic material.
    Thank you all,

    Dennis

    • Hello. She needs to have proper bloodwork. Not just TSH but free T3 and 4 etc. Stopthethyroidmadnesd is a helpful website and book. For many of us, desiccated thyroid medicine works better. I take NP. Find a doctor or alternative medicine person who listens!

      • Ellen, where do you live? Can you still get NP thyroid? I had to switch to Armour 2 months ago as NP not available.

        Thanks,

        Doris
